Welcome to the BBQ Capital of the World!
Named after Colonel Abraham Owen, Owensboro was originally settled in 1797. With a current population in excess of 60,000 residents, it is the county seat of Daviess County and the third-largest city in the state of Kentucky. After Evansville, IN, it is the second-largest city in the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State area. Overlooking a gentle horseshoe bend on the southern banks of the Ohio River, Owensboro has grown to become a center for industry, medicine, retail and culture, and it offers a wide selection of restaurants, shopping, hotels, parks and events. And the growth continues - the riverfront is currently getting upgraded to feature overlook pavilions, a signature fountain, a new boat ramp, and a riverfront promenade.
Owensboro is accessible by major airlines or by driving along I-24, I-64 or I-65 using the Natcher and Audubon Parkways. It lies between Louisville, KY and Evansville, IN, and just a few hours north of Nashville, TN, and just a few hours southeast of St. Louis, MO. Other nearby cities and towns include Masonville, Pettit, Philpot, Utica, Sorgho and Birk City (Kentucky side of the border) as well as Evansville, Newburgh, Chandler, Boonville, Gentryville and Lincoln City (Indiana side).
While in Owensboro, don't miss the International Bluegrass Music Museum, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, the annual International BBQ Festival or Friday After 5, a series of free outdoor music concerts held weekly all throughout the summer at the RiverPark Center.
